OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work, a tool that can handle lengthy tasks
OpenAI introduces ChatGPT Work, promising to solve the earlier Agent Mode's time limits by staying with projects for hours, automating workflows, and integrating with workplace tools.

OpenAI has unveiled a new tool called ChatGPT Work, designed to address the limitations of the earlier “Agent Mode” in the Atlas web browser. Last year, testing revealed that automated tasks in Agent Mode would stop after a few minutes, hampering its usefulness for longer or complex assignments. With ChatGPT Work, the company claims the tool can “stay with a project for hours if needed, and turn a goal into finished work.”
OpenAI challenges users to evaluate ChatGPT Work by giving it a task they already know well, such as analyzing a budget or preparing for a sales meeting. The tool can automate entire workflows, from customer research to creating a campaign brief and locally tailored marketing assets. However, the company stresses that the tool will wait for user approval before performing important actions.
ChatGPT Work also includes Scheduled Tasks, an enhanced version of cron jobs that can handle repetitive tasks on a schedule or when a monitored event occurs. These tasks continue running while the user is away from their desk and can be monitored via a smartphone.
The tool can connect to common workplace platforms like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and SharePoint through custom-built plugins. The desktop version can access and modify local files and use a built-in browser to fetch online resources. OpenAI also says an updated ChatGPT Chrome extension will allow web-native tasks without leaving the browser. Meanwhile, the company announced that its dedicated Atlas web browser is being sunset, less than nine months after its launch.
