Latvian tennis player Aļona Ostapenko, ranked 38th in the WTA and seeded third in the tournament, will meet Great Britain's Francesca Jones (WTA 99.) in the first round. The two have never faced each other before.
The winner of this match will advance to the second round to face either Hungarian player Panna Udvardi (WTA 68.) or Anna Bondar (WTA 74.).
Ostapenko has won 16 of her 29 matches this season. She lost in the second round of the French Open. Jones, meanwhile, has 10 wins in 23 matches this year. She also lost in the second round in Paris and earlier in June suffered a first-round defeat on grass at the London WTA 500 event.
Ostapenko won the Eastbourne title in 2021, reached the final in 2022, and lost in the round of 16 last year. This is her tenth appearance at the Eastbourne tournament. The grass-court competition will conclude next Saturday.
