Ostapenko's Wimbledon Mixed Doubles Title: One of Latvia's Biggest Sports Achievements This Year
Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arevalo won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title. Expert Māris Rozentāls says this is one of Latvia's top sports moments of the year.

Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador claimed the Wimbledon mixed doubles title on Thursday evening, defeating Australian duo Storm Hunter and Mark Polmans. It was the first Wimbledon title for both players.
Latvian tennis expert Māris Rozentāls told Sportacentrs.com that this achievement ranks among the biggest Latvian sports events of the year. While mixed doubles often receive less attention than singles, a Grand Slam victory is significant. Rozentāls noted that Ostapenko's matches throughout the tournament were of high quality and competitive.
Mixed doubles have been contested at Wimbledon since 1913, and this year's event featured 32 pairs. According to Rozentāls, the discipline requires a specific approach – men must dominate on serve, while women rely more on technique and placement.
For the win, Ostapenko and Arevalo receive £148,000 (approximately €173,000), which is slightly more than a second-round singles exit (£126,000) but less than reaching the third round (£185,000). However, Rozentāls believes prize money should not be the primary measure of success, as the trophy and title carry unique prestige.
This is Ostapenko's third Grand Slam title. She previously won the 2017 French Open in singles and the 2023 US Open in doubles.
Assessing the impact on Latvian sports, Rozentāls admitted it is difficult to compare across disciplines, but he stated that this triumph will definitely be among the top three or five Latvian sports achievements in 2026.
