Amazon's 2026 Basic Kindle Stays the Cheapest Entry to E-Readers After Price Hikes
Amazon refreshed its Kindle e-reader lineup in October, with prices up $40 to $50 across models. A TechCrunch review finds the 6-inch entry model, from $169.99, still worth buying for those who can skip extra features.

Amazon, the US technology company, unveiled a refreshed Kindle e-reader lineup in October, its first significant design overhaul in years. After a couple of weeks of testing, technology site TechCrunch concluded that the basic 6-inch model remains a reasonable buy for readers who can live without premium extras. The question matters because prices rose across the whole range.
Pricing and the new design
The updated lineup features an edge-to-edge design without raised bezels, thinner and lighter Paperwhite and Colorsoft models with better displays, and page-turning accessories: a Bluetooth remote and a magnetic cover with page-turn buttons. According to the reviewer, prices went up by $40 to $50 on every model, which is linked to a global memory-chip shortage driven by the AI boom. As a result, the ad-free 6-inch Kindle, starting at $169.99, remains the most affordable option for new e-reader buyers.
What changed in the basic model
The plastic 2026 Kindle is 11% lighter and 14% thinner than the 2024 version, weighing 140g versus 158g and measuring 6.85mm versus 8mm. The aluminum version weighs 162g. Amazon says books open 30% faster. The screen is now flush with the front, and the software detects a dead zone at the screen edge, so resting a thumb on the outer border does not trigger accidental taps.
Compared with the 2019 Kindle Basic, the new model adds USB-C, 16GB or 32GB of storage and a 300 ppi resolution instead of 167 ppi.
What it lacks
The basic model has no warm light, color display, auto-adjusting brightness, waterproofing or support for the page-turn cover. Battery life is 6 weeks, against 12 for the Paperwhite and 8 for the Colorsoft. The 16GB plastic version costs $169.99, the 32GB aluminum one $189.99, and a purple color called Ube is also available. The 16GB Paperwhite costs $199.99 and the 32GB version $249.99. The reviewer notes that those who read at night in dim light may prefer the Paperwhite.
