Fake fan images flood social media during World Cup – from Hitler lookalike to AI beauties

After Germany's win over Curaçao, a screenshot of a fan resembling Hitler went viral, but it was digitally altered; similarly, several videos of attractive female fans were entirely AI-generated, part of a clickbait scheme.

The World Cup in North America is underway, but alongside the matches, manipulated media is spreading on social media. Following Germany's 7-1 victory over Curaçao on June 14, a screenshot purportedly showed a fan with a side-part, small moustache, and stern expression – strongly resembling Adolf Hitler. However, despite the packed stadium, no one else appeared to notice or photograph the man; the single screenshot was the only evidence. German broadcaster Deutsche Welle noted that a genuine far-right extremist would be unlikely to wear the modern national team jersey, which features black, red, and gold – symbols Hitler despised.

Investigators matched the viral clip to the official FIFA broadcast. At the exact timestamp (50:09), the original feed showed a normal grey-haired fan with no resemblance to Hitler. His face had been digitally altered, likely using AI.

A parallel trend involved hyper-attractive female supporters supposedly caught on camera. Examples include an Italian user claiming to become a Germany fan because of them, an Algerian woman said to overshadow Lionel Messi, and a video of a Brazilian fan distracted by a beautiful woman (viewed 14 million times). All these women are entirely AI-generated. In the Brazilian video, eye movements are erratic, the match clock is frozen, and the commentator's voice sounds synthetic.

The account that posted the Brazilian video claims to be a 23-year-old woman in Miami but is operated from Romania, posting only AI content. Its business model relies on traffic baiting – using hyper-sexualized AI posts tied to global events to redirect users to paid subscription sites with explicit, often AI-generated, content.
