First draw at World Cup: Canada and Bosnia play 1-1

The Canadian men's national football team played their first match of the World Cup finals on Friday in Toronto, drawing 1-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Canada, along with Mexico and the United States, is one of the tournament's host nations.

Early in the match, Canada had a chance to take the lead – in the 17th minute, Jonathan David's shot from about 12 meters was saved by goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. Bosnia, however, capitalized on their opportunity in the 21st minute when Jovo Lukić headed the ball into the net from a corner kick, making it 1-0.

In the second half, Canada pushed for an equalizer. In the 53rd minute, a shot by Richie Laryea hit Bosnia's captain Sead Kolašinac and bounced off the crossbar. The equalizer came in the 78th minute when Cyle Larin received the ball in the penalty area, turned, and struck it powerfully into the goal to make it 1-1. Larin had entered the match just two minutes earlier.

Canada and Bosnia play in Group B, which also includes Qatar and Switzerland, who will play their first match on Saturday. In Group D, the United States will face Paraguay at 4 a.m. Latvian time, while Group F features Australia and Turkey.

This is the first World Cup with 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams will advance to the knockout stage. The group stage ends on June 27, and the knockout stage begins on June 28. The semifinals will be held on July 14 and 15, the bronze medal match on July 18, and the final on July 19. The reigning champion is Argentina.
