Animal protection organisation Animals Asia has shared the story of a bear named Lellija, who spent more than 20 years confined and held in captivity.

After being rescued and brought to a sanctuary, Lellija had the doors to the outside world opened to her for the first time, where fresh air, green grass and treats awaited her. However, the decades spent in confinement had left a heavy mark — the world beyond her cage initially seemed too strange and frightening. She made several attempts to take her first steps outside, but each time returned anxiously indoors.

A process with no rush

Representatives of the organisation say that animals in such situations are never rushed. For months, Lellija chose to spend most of her time indoors, until gradually, at her own pace, her confidence and courage began to grow.

Step by step, the bear began exploring her surroundings, enjoying fresh grass, playing and tasting the treats prepared for her.

Animals Asia rescuers stress that freedom cannot be measured by the first step taken outside — true freedom is the ability to choose for oneself when to take that step, once truly ready.
