American firms sweep top spots in Pentagon's $1.1 billion drone program, but Ukrainian tech still gets in

US firms took every top slot in the Pentagon's $1.1 billion Drone Dominance program, while Ukraine's battle-tested drone makers missed out on leading positions, though some Ukrainian technology reportedly made it in through Western partners.

The US Department of Defense has completed selections for its Drone Dominance program, a $1.1 billion initiative, with American companies securing every top-tier position, according to Euromaidan Press.

This outcome means that none of Ukraine's drone manufacturers — companies whose technology has been tested extensively in real combat conditions during the war with Russia — landed a leading slot as a prime contractor in the program.

Ukrainian technology finds an indirect path

Despite Ukrainian firms not claiming top positions themselves, the report notes that some Ukrainian-developed drone technology is still making its way into the program — incorporated through partnerships with Western companies that did win top slots.

This arrangement suggests that while the formal competition favored domestic American manufacturers, the technical expertise and lessons Ukraine has accumulated during the war continue to be recognized as valuable, even if not rewarded with direct, primary contract status.

The Pentagon's program forms part of broader US efforts to expand domestic drone manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. Ukraine's drone industry has emerged in recent years as one of the world's most advanced, largely due to intensive wartime experience, but that reputation has not translated into leading roles in this particular US government procurement effort. Instead, Ukrainian innovation appears to be entering the American defense supply chain indirectly, through collaboration with the US firms that did secure top contracts, rather than through direct awards to Ukrainian companies themselves.
