Study: Psilocybin May Make the Brain More Attuned to the Present Moment

A large neuroimaging study published in Nature found that while psilocybin increases unpredictability in brain activity, it also sharpens the brain's response to what a person is experiencing in real time. The finding may help explain the sense of unity many report during psychedelic trips.

Scientists have long believed that psychedelics disrupt the brain's usual organization, making the signals between neurons more unpredictable. This heightened randomness has often been linked to the strange, memorable nature of psychedelic experiences.

However, one of the largest brain-imaging studies of psilocybin's effects to date has found a kind of hidden order within that apparent chaos. The study, published in the journal Nature, shows that while psilocybin blurs certain boundaries within the brain, a person's neurological response to what they are experiencing in the moment actually becomes more distinct.

How the study worked

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography, researchers tracked moment-by-moment activity across 332 brain regions in 62 participants who had no previous experience with psychedelics. Participants took an oral capsule containing 19 milligrams of psilocybin, then either meditated, listened to music, or watched a movie.

With the help of artificial intelligence, the researchers identified distinct brain activity patterns corresponding to each activity. Surprisingly, the more intense the psilocybin experience became, the clearer these neural signals were. Rather than dissolving into unpredictability, the brain's imprint of reality appeared to sharpen.

Linked to personal experience

These patterns were reflected not only in the biological data but also in participants' own accounts. Those whose brain activity showed the clearest patterns also tended to describe more intense feelings of immersion and unity with their surroundings, with the boundary between self and environment sometimes feeling blurred.

Lead author Devon Stoliker, a researcher at Monash University's School of Psychological Sciences in Melbourne, explained that under psilocybin, brain networks involved in processing the inner and outer world become less distinct, but reorganize into patterns reflecting what a person is actually experiencing.

Senior author Adeel Razi noted that context is not merely a backdrop to a psychedelic experience — the environment and what a person does during a session matter for treatment outcomes, a point especially relevant to the emerging field of psychedelic therapy.
