Insufficient sleep not only makes you feel tired and unwell, but it can also silently increase your body weight. A recent study conducted by researchers at Columbia University has revealed that even a small reduction in sleep duration – about one and a half hours less each night over six weeks – leads to considerable weight gain and changes in the body.

During the sleep restriction phase, participants slept an average of 78 minutes less than usual. The findings showed that this resulted in an average weight gain, though exact numbers were not disclosed in the study description. The results confirm previous evidence that regular, adequate sleep is a key factor in preventing weight gain and reducing the risk of obesity-related diseases.

The researchers emphasize that lack of sleep affects metabolism, hormone balance, and appetite regulation, making people more prone to unhealthy snacking and higher calorie intake. While losing just one hour of sleep may seem minor, its cumulative effect over weeks can significantly contribute to weight gain.
