Unusual pedestrian crossing near Vanšu Bridge in Riga leads into sand

Riga resident Maija noticed a pedestrian crossing near Vanšu Bridge where following the road markings means stepping into sand. Many pedestrians cross next to the zebra instead.

An unusual pedestrian crossing has been spotted in Riga, near Vanšu Bridge. Riga resident Maija drew attention to it, and the programme "Bez tabu" reported on the situation. The crossing has raised questions because people who want to use it must act differently from how a normal zebra crossing works.

Sand at the end of the zebra

The crossing is marked with a horizontal road marking, which normally shows the intended place to cross a street. However, anyone who crosses exactly along this marking has to step into sand. That makes the crossing awkward to use, since pedestrians must walk on loose ground instead of the usual surface.

How residents reacted

The programme's team spoke with several Riga residents. Some of them were not particularly surprised by the crossing, and it seemed that nothing amazes them any more. Most people, however, do not want to dirty their shoes. As a result, they cross the street not on the marked zebra but next to it.

The report does not say who is responsible for the crossing or whether it will be fixed any time soon.
