Weather forecasters are warning that Latvia will experience its first storm of the autumn season on Friday, October 9. According to the latest forecasts, wind will strengthen progressively through Friday morning and into the day.

Wind strength and direction

A southwesterly wind is expected, with gusts inland reaching 16 to 21 meters per second. Along the coast, the wind will be noticeably stronger, with gusts potentially exceeding 28 meters per second. Forecasters say the wind will begin to subside during the night from Friday into Saturday.

Comparison with the August storm

While the upcoming storm will be a significant weather event, its consequences are expected to be less destructive than those experienced in the summer. For comparison, forecasters point to the night of August 22 into August 23, when Latvia was hit by the strongest storm recorded during the summer season in observation history.

Weather before the storm

Before the stormy Friday, conditions on Wednesday and Thursday will be considerably calmer. Those days are expected to be mostly dry and sunny, with light to moderate wind. On Thursday, air temperatures could rise as high as 20 degrees Celsius.

Turning colder on Friday

With the storm's arrival, temperatures will also shift — Friday will feel noticeably colder, with daytime air temperatures in many areas failing to reach 10 degrees. Besides the wind and cooling, scattered rain showers are also expected on Friday.
