Bouncy castle play linked to Ireland's largest-ever MRSA outbreak among children
An MRSA outbreak tied to bouncy castle use has sickened 48 children in Ireland, marking the largest such outbreak in the country's history and the first known case linked to inflatable play structures worldwide.

Health officials in Ireland have documented an unprecedented case: bouncy castle use linked to the country's largest-ever outbreak of MRSA, a bacterium resistant to multiple antibiotics. In total, 48 children were infected, making this the first known MRSA outbreak anywhere in the world tied specifically to inflatable play equipment.
The strain identified, t016-ST22-MRSA-IV, carries an unusual resistance pattern, withstanding at least four drugs: flucloxacillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, and trimethoprim. Fortunately, it remained susceptible to several other treatments, including clindamycin, tetracycline, fusidic acid, co-trimoxazole, and linezolid.
What investigators found
Interviews with families of the infected children revealed that most had played inside the bouncy castles for extended periods — some for five, six hours or more. Conditions inside were crowded, and play was described as rough-and-tumble, the kind of activity that could easily cause minor scrapes and abrasions, giving the bacterium a way into the skin.
Parents also recalled that the weather that day was humid, warm, and rainy, leaving many children visibly wet. Combined, these factors could have created near-ideal conditions for the MRSA strain to thrive and spread among the children.
Of the 48 infected children, 47 had played in the bouncy castles. The single remaining case involved a child who had not used the inflatables but had close contact with an infected child shortly afterward. Investigators concluded no other plausible source of exposure existed — all evidence pointed to the bouncy castles.
Despite this, officials chose not to swab the castles themselves for confirmation. A positive surface test would not have definitively proven the castles were the source, and by the time suspicion fell on them, it was unclear whether the bacterium would still be viable on the surfaces. Instead, health authorities contacted the owners of the bouncy castles and recommended thorough decontamination.
