Gita Muceniece, a runner from Pilsrundāle in Latvia's Bauska municipality, covered 232.421 kilometres at the “Albi 24 Heures” race in France and set a new Latvian record for the 24-hour run. The event, held on 17 and 18 October, challenges participants to cover as much distance as possible within 24 hours.

Runners completed laps of roughly 1.5 kilometres each.

Return after injury

Muceniece's plans were derailed last year at the world championship because of an injury, and she did not reach her goal. This year she returned to Albi with a clear objective: to break the Latvian record.

She said she is satisfied and proud to have done it regardless of the obstacles. She admitted that the final hours of the race were especially hard, but determination and persistence helped her reach the target.

Support

Muceniece credited the work of her coach Toms Komass and her support team, her mother Ligita Dunkule and her son Raineris Mucenieks. She also thanked the Bauska municipality for co-funding that allows her to take part in international competitions and achieve results outside Latvia.

Her participation is supported by the Sports and Health Department of the Bauska municipality.
