In the era of streaming services, maintaining your own media library has become a niche activity. However, if you're looking for the best way to play your collection of movies and TV shows, you've likely come across Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby. All three allow you to create your own personal Netflix, but differ in functionality, price, and complexity.

Plex is the easiest to use—it guides you through setup, and basic features are free. However, if you want hardware transcoding or remote streaming (e.g., while traveling), you need to pay. Following a price hike last year, a lifetime Plex Pass now costs $750, while monthly subscriptions are $3 for basic remote streaming and $7 for extras like hardware transcoding. Plex handles logins and security via its own cloud servers, making it convenient but expensive.

Jellyfin is completely free and open-source, with no option to purchase (you can only donate). It offers more privacy and freedom but requires users to configure networking themselves—setting up a mesh network, secure tunnel, or dynamic DNS. Additionally, you need to connect a database for content cataloging. Jellyfin is ideal for those comfortable with technical setup.

Emby sits in the middle: a monthly subscription costs $5, or $119 for a lifetime license. It runs more locally than Plex but requires user network configuration for remote streaming, similar to Jellyfin. Emby may appeal to those who dislike Plex's centralization but find Jellyfin too much work.
