Sony to End Production of Physical PlayStation Game Discs by 2028
Sony announced that as of January 2028, new PlayStation games will no longer be released on physical discs, only digitally. The move follows consumer trends toward digital media, but critics point to loss of resale value and sharing capabilities.

Sony has officially announced that it will completely halt the production of physical discs for new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. From that point onward, all new releases will be available exclusively in digital format through the PlayStation Store and other online retailers. Games released before January 2028 will continue to be sold on discs.
The company explains that this decision is a natural response to shifting consumer habits, with digital media preferences significantly outpacing physical discs. “This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” Sony said in its statement. The transition is intended to align more closely with how most of the gaming community now prefers to access and play games.
The announcement comes shortly after it was revealed that the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto VI will only contain a download code, which prompted a quick backlash from fans. While digital copies offer certain advantages, they deny buyers any resale value, make sharing games more difficult, and leave players reliant on ongoing access to console servers and accounts to play their purchased titles.
