Floodwaters Engulf Russia’s Tyumen; State of Emergency Declared
Heavy rainfall in Tyumen, Russia, caused the Tura River to overflow, leading to severe flooding and a state of emergency. Water levels reached 877 cm, exceeding the flood threshold, and residents are advised to drink bottled water due to contamination.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in the Russian city of Tyumen and the surrounding district as flooding continues to worsen. The Tura River has overflowed its banks, inundating neighborhoods across the city and nearby communities. Regional Governor Alexander Moor said the flooding was caused by unusually heavy rainfall: June alone saw two and a half times the area’s average monthly precipitation. As of July 28, the Tura had reached a level of 877 centimeters, well above the official flood threshold of 850 centimeters.
Since the flooding began, residents have reported a sharp decline in water quality, complaining that tap water has developed a foul odor. Russia’s consumer protection agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has advised people in Tyumen to drink only bottled water. The flood is expected to peak between July 28 and July 31.
