Police Officer Causes Accident Under Influence, Flees Scene in Aizkraukle
Latvian State Police detained one of its officers on Wednesday evening for causing a traffic accident under the influence of alcohol in Aizkraukle and then fleeing. A criminal investigation has been launched.

The State Police in Aizkraukle detained a police officer on Wednesday evening after she caused a traffic accident while under the influence of alcohol and subsequently fled the scene, Police Chief Armands Ruks informed LETA.
The accident occurred when the female driver hit an obstacle and left the scene. A search led police to the perpetrator—their own colleague. An alcohol test confirmed she was intoxicated.
The officer is now in temporary detention, and a criminal process has been initiated. Ruks noted that she has approximately 30 years of service and was previously considered disciplined, with no prior violations. The reason for her actions remains unknown.
This is the second recent incident involving a police officer committing a serious offense under the influence. Last week, a police officer in Priekule fatally beat a teacher while drunk. Following these cases, Interior Minister Jānis Dombrava (NA) has called for a service review against Police Chief Ruks.
