Man detained in Poland for assaulting Ukrainian woman in Gdynia
A 76-year-old man has been detained in Poland for attacking a 40-year-old Ukrainian woman in Gdynia. The prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the bodily harm.
Police in Poland have detained a 76-year-old man suspected of assaulting a 40-year-old Ukrainian woman in Gdynia. The attack took place on July 30, when the man struck the woman twice on the head with a wooden walking stick and then fled the scene. The suspect was apprehended by criminal investigators from the Gdynia City Police Headquarters.
The District Prosecutor's Office in Gdynia has launched proceedings on its own initiative regarding a crime involving bodily harm to the victim. In a statement issued on Saturday after 4:30 p.m., police said that the circumstances established so far do not indicate that the incident was a hate crime motivated by national prejudice. Further procedural actions are ongoing.
The case comes amid a series of recent attacks on Ukrainians in Poland. In Wrocław, a group of Polish men assaulted a young Ukrainian couple, allegedly after hearing their accent; the perpetrators were placed in custody for three months. Additionally, on a train near Warsaw, two men harassed a Ukrainian passenger. Following intervention by the conductor and other passengers, they were removed from the carriage and later fined by police.
In response to these incidents, Poland's Interior Ministry stressed that such acts would be met with an appropriate response from law enforcement. Prime Minister Donald Tusk also called on President Karol Nawrocki to "break the silence."
