Poland Formally Requests US to Extradite Former Justice Minister Ziobro
On July 27, Poland officially asked the United States to arrest and extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, who faces charges of abuse of power, misusing state funds, and spying on political opponents.
Polish authorities have formally requested the United States to arrest and extradite former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, a controversial figure from the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party. The request was submitted on July 27 through diplomatic channels by Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek.
Ziobro is accused of 19 out of 26 charges, including leading an organized criminal group within the Ministry of Justice, abuse of office, rigging grant competitions to benefit government-friendly organizations, and using Pegasus spyware against political opponents. These charges stem from the tenure of the PiS government from 2015 to 2023, which Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-European coalition has vowed to hold accountable for corruption.
Ziobro's judicial reforms during his time in office gave the government extensive influence over judges and prosecutors, leading to conflicts with the European Union. He initially received political asylum in Hungary from former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, but left for the United States in May after Hungarian elections brought in Péter Magyar, who promised to extradite him. In the US, Ziobro works as a political commentator for the PiS-friendly broadcaster TV Republika.
Ziobro has dismissed the charges as fabricated and called the case a political vendetta by Tusk. Meanwhile, Poland's political landscape has become more complex after nearly 40 MPs split from PiS last week under former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. Polls suggest Tusk's coalition may struggle to secure a majority in the next parliament.
