Poland's Interior Ministry on Thursday, 6 November 2026, outlined amendments that would let authorities revoke Polish citizenship obtained through forged documents or false information. The changes form part of a wider push by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government to tighten the country's immigration policy.

What the amendments provide

Authorities could overturn decisions granting citizenship to foreigners who used forged documents, gave false information or concealed important details during the application process. In a post on the platform X, the ministry said Polish citizenship must rest on a genuine connection with Poland, not on fraud.

Applicants would also have to pass a mandatory citizenship test, affirm loyalty to Poland and show that they live and pay taxes in the country.

Where the proposals stand

The proposals were added to the government's legislative agenda last week but have not yet been officially approved. The government aims to adopt the bill by the end of 2026, after which it would go to parliament.

In July, while the reforms were still being drafted, the ministry said it wanted to end what it calls "automatism" in naturalisation. It would be replaced by a new model that integrates foreigners into Polish society only after strict criteria are met. The ministry said this would protect Poland from mistakes made by other countries in the past.

Wider context

Tusk became prime minister in December 2023. His government has taken an increasingly firm line on immigration, including measures to limit the ability of irregular migrants to seek asylum at Poland's border with Belarus.

According to Interior Ministry data, more than 19,000 people acquired Polish citizenship in 2025, compared with 16,647 the year before.
