Proshina takes 11th place at European Fencing Championships in épée
Latvian fencer Veronika Proshina finished 11th in the women's épée event at the European Championships, while Marija Orlova placed 69th.

Proshina's performance
In the preliminary rounds, Veronika Proshina won four of her five group bouts, while Marija Orlova won half of her six bouts. Proshina, who became both European and world junior champion this year, was seeded 17th. In the elimination rounds, she received a bye in the first round, then defeated Portugal's Maria Alvima (48th seed) 14-10, and Hungary's Lili Buki (16th) 15-9 before losing to tournament favorite Alicja Klasika of Poland 7-10 in the round of 16.
Proshina finished 11th. A year ago she placed 14th, and two years ago 16th.
Other Latvian fencers
Marija Orlova (60th) lost to Belarus's Aleksandra Curska (69th) 10-15 in the first round and ranked 69th out of 100 competitors.
Earlier, in men's épée, Daniils Zamkovojs placed 72nd and Glebs Čaikovskis shared 98th place. On Wednesday, in women's foil, Polina Kozlova and Nikola Junele finished in shared 56th and 61st places, respectively.
The championship in Antony, France runs until Sunday.
