Prošina fails to reach European Championship quarterfinals
Latvian fencer Prošina lost to Polish Alicja Klasika in the round of 16, ending her run. Orlova finished 69th.

Latvian fencer Emīlija Prošina did not advance to the quarterfinals of the European Championships on Thursday, losing 7-10 to top seed Alicja Klasika of Poland in the round of 16.
In the preliminary rounds, Prošina won four of five bouts in her group. In the knockout stage, seeded 17th, she received a first-round bye, then defeated Maria Alvimu of Portugal (48th seed) 14-10, and Lili Buki of Hungary (16th seed) 15-9 before falling to Klasika.
Kristīne Orlova, seeded 60th, lost 10-15 to Aleksandra Curska of Belarus (69th seed) in the first round and finished 69th among 100 competitors.
Earlier in the week, other Latvian fencers had less success: Daniils Zamkovojs finished 72nd and Glebs Čaikovskis tied for 98th in men's épée, while Polīna Kozlova and Nikola Junele placed tied 56th and 61st respectively in women's foil.
The European Championships in Antony, France run through Sunday. Originally scheduled to be held in Estonia, the event was moved after Estonia failed to provide government guarantees for visas to Russian and Belarusian athletes.
