Psychologists: Emotional Compatibility Matters More Than Shared Interests for Lasting Friendship

Experts cited by Real Simple say that the durability of a friendship depends on emotional compatibility: listening, respecting boundaries and resolving disagreements. Shared hobbies and similar values alone are not enough.

Shared hobbies, similar values and living nearby often help people become friends, but they are not enough to make a friendship last and feel rewarding. The US publication Real Simple, citing psychology experts, reports that emotional compatibility also matters: the ability to listen, accept another person's feelings, work through disagreements and respect personal boundaries. In adult life, when time and energy are often scarcer than people would like, this aspect becomes especially important.

Understand your own needs first

Alivia Hall, a licensed psychotherapist and clinical director of the clinic LiteMinded Therapy, suggests recalling a recent situation when you needed a friend's support, or when a friend expected it from you. It helps to ask whether you simply needed someone to listen, to check in the next day, or to spend time with you. Equally important is judging whether you have enough energy and time to support others, and whether you can honestly say so when you cannot.

Signs of compatibility and warning signals

Positive signs include genuine interest in experiences that differ from your own and the ability to respect both people's needs and boundaries. For example, you should feel free to say that you are too tired to meet this week, and the other person should not take that as indifference.

Warning signs include conflicts in which one person's feelings are dismissed, for instance by accusing them of being oversensitive. Another worrying pattern is when only one person tries to repair the relationship after every argument. Psychologist Missy Kleinz adds that disagreements can also stem from different expectations about how often to be in touch and how much to share.

Needs change over time

Emotional compatibility does not mean identical needs. Mutual understanding and flexibility matter more. A person's capacity is affected by stress, mental health, the loss of a loved one, raising children, work and temperament. The experts advise against rushing to conclusions: compatibility can only be judged over a longer period, by observing how both people act when their needs and abilities differ.
