PTAC: Several fuel retailers provide unclear information on loyalty program discounts

The Consumer Rights Protection Center (PTAC) has found that several fuel retailers in Latvia do not provide sufficiently clear information about loyalty program discounts, making it difficult for consumers to choose the best offer.

The Consumer Rights Protection Center (PTAC) has conducted an evaluation of fuel retailers' loyalty programs and discount offers. The findings indicate that consumers often struggle to understand which offer is most advantageous. PTAC states that several retailers fail to provide clear information at gas stations, on websites, and in mobile applications.

PTAC continues individual communication with one fuel retailer to ensure improved information clarity. The evaluation revealed that discount conditions vary significantly across different networks. Therefore, consumers are advised to consider not only the discount in cents per liter but also the final price and the terms of application.

The largest discounts are typically offered on weekends or during promotion periods, while more stable daily discounts come from programs with a fixed discount per liter. The benefit in many programs depends on consumer activity, the volume of fuel purchased, or the frequency of visits. Mobile apps are becoming increasingly important, as discounts often need to be activated or personalized offers are provided through them.

PTAC noted that in some cases, discount principles are complex—for example, discounts may not be cumulative, may be valid only during specific times, or may be single-use. To avoid confusion, PTAC recommends that consumers compare the final price per liter, check when and how the discount is applied (immediately, via app, with a customer or partner card, or later as a bonus), and review key terms such as duration, minimum purchase amount, applicable fuel types, station network, and payment method.

It is also advisable to find out whether discounts can be combined with other promotions, coupons, or loyalty program discounts, and to evaluate one's own shopping habits. Regular customers may benefit more from volume or visit-based programs, while occasional purchases are better suited to short-term promotions. If there are any doubts, consumers are encouraged to contact the fuel retailer and ask for clarification.
