Why Purple USB Ports Exist and Why They’re Rare in the US

Purple USB ports are not a standard color but are often used by Huawei for fast charging. They are rarely seen in the US due to trade sanctions. Experts advise ignoring color and checking certification instead.

USB port colors can be misleading. While many assume purple is just a design choice, it actually indicates specific features – fast charging and high data transfer speeds. However, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) only officially recognizes white, black, and blue (USB 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0). Any other color, including purple, is manufacturer-specific.

Purple USB connectors are primarily associated with Huawei’s SuperCharge system. Huawei uses purple on Type-A and Type-C ports for chargers supporting 40W or more. However, the company now only uses purple on its 25W Mini Charger, while newer models (66W and 100W) use orange connectors. Because Huawei smartphones are banned in the US due to sanctions, purple ports are rarely found there.

Some third-party manufacturers use purple or teal blue to denote USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds (10 Gbps). Others, like Anker and Apple, rely on USB-IF certification rather than color coding.

Color-based selection can be dangerous – choosing the wrong cable may damage batteries or even cause fires. The safe approach is to look for USB-IF certification for power delivery and check the data standard (e.g., USB 3.1 up to USB4 with up to 40 Gbps).
