Latvia's Food and Veterinary Service (PVD) has identified verotoxigenic E. coli bacteria during laboratory testing of pork from pigs that were raised in Lithuania and slaughtered in Latvia. According to the agency, the meat may still be used in production, but only after undergoing heat treatment sufficient to destroy the bacteria.

Other contaminated products found

The inspection also uncovered problems with other food products. Chicken meat of Estonian origin, packaged in a three-cheese marinade in 400-gram packs, was found to contain "Salmonella Infantis" bacteria. That product had already passed its expiration date and is no longer available for sale.

Separately, ground coriander of Russian origin, sold in 400-gram packages under batch number "210", was found to contain "Salmonella Hadar" bacteria. This product has already been sent for destruction to prevent it from reaching consumers.

The Food and Veterinary Service conducts regular laboratory checks on food products to ensure that items reaching the market meet safety standards and do not pose a risk to public health.
