As autumn turns colder in Latvia, residents of apartment buildings often find their homes chilly while the radiators are still off. Andris Vindels, head of the customer service and warranty department at housing developer Bonava Latvija, explains why this happens and how to stay comfortable until the heating season begins.

When heating starts

Heating in apartment buildings usually starts once the average outdoor temperature stays below +8 °C for three days in a row. In a warm autumn this can take longer, since daytime air is milder than evenings and nights. Heating can be switched on earlier if most residents of a building want it. Technical issues, such as a heat substation malfunction, or unpaid heating bills can also delay the start. If an apartment stays cool for long or humidity rises, residents should contact the building manager.

Adding warmth and comfort

Vindels recommends rugs, blankets, cushions and warmer clothing, and closing curtains in the evening, especially in apartments with large windows. Electric heaters suit short-term use or a single room, because prolonged use can noticeably raise electricity bills. They should never be left unattended or placed near curtains, furniture or laundry.

Ventilation and humidity

Closing ventilation openings and airing rooms less often increases humidity and the risk of condensation and mold. Windows are best opened fully for a few minutes several times a day. The recommended relative humidity is roughly 40–60%. Laundry should be dried in a well-ventilated place.

Windows and radiators

A chill near a window does not always mean it is faulty: cold glass cools the air, which sinks and feels like a draught. Tightness can be checked with a sheet of paper, and windows should not be adjusted without proper knowledge. Before the season starts, the radiator thermostat should be left fully open and radiators left uncovered. If a radiator stays cold, residents should contact the manager.

Comfortable temperature for most people starts around +18 °C, while +20 to +22 °C is often considered optimal in living rooms. The expert advises against lowering heating each time residents leave home, as reheating uses more energy.
