Currently, residency recruitment for young doctors is in full swing at both Latvian universities—Riga Stradiņš University (RSU) and the University of Latvia (UL). Applications have been submitted, and trends are emerging: which specialties are the most popular this year, even to the point where seven to eight people compete for one spot, and which remain unfilled state-funded positions. There are currently several dozen unfilled spots, but this is not yet final. The specialty of radiologist is one of the most in-demand, while in the fields of psychiatry-narcology and geriatrics, not a single application was submitted. These trends highlight the varying levels of interest among future doctors, with some fields attracting high competition and others facing a lack of applicants.
