Range Rover Confirms All-New Electric GT – Is It Stepping on Jaguar's Tail?
Range Rover has confirmed a fifth model: the all-electric Range Rover GT, a grand tourer built on the EMA platform. The full reveal is expected later this year, with sales starting in 2027.
In a significant move, Range Rover has officially confirmed an entirely new fifth vehicle: the Range Rover GT, an all-electric grand tourer built on the company's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA). So far, only camouflaged prototype images have been shared, as the GT is still undergoing final testing. Key details such as price, range, and power figures remain undisclosed. The company has confirmed that the car will hit the road in 2027.
The camouflaged images reveal a sleek silhouette and coupé proportions, more reminiscent of sister brand Jaguar than the SUV-focused Range Rover. Both brands are part of JLR (formerly Jaguar Land Rover).
Martin Limpert, global managing director at Range Rover, stated that the GT aims to “redefine the grand-touring segment” with its “GT poise, proportions and long-distance refinement.” He added that the EV will offer “capabilities no conventional GT can match.”
The Range Rover GT draws inevitable comparisons with the upcoming Jaguar Type 01, another all-electric grand tourer also arriving in 2027. A Range Rover spokesperson insisted that the two brands are “very different” and offer “very different propositions,” noting that the GT retains Range Rover's all-terrain capability. However, both are grand tourers, both electric, both from the same parent company, both targeting wealthy buyers seeking comfort for long-distance driving.
The interior of the GT is minimalist and spacious, with a panoramic roof, a small driver's display, and a larger central screen. Range Rover has opted for touchscreens for all controls, including climate, going against the industry trend of returning to physical buttons. The GT will launch as an EV, with hybrid options following later in its lifecycle. In contrast, Jaguar is committed to being an electric-only brand.
The GT will be built on the EMA platform at JLR's Halewood plant in the UK. EMA will also underpin the next-generation Evoque EV, Discovery Sport, an electric Velar successor, and the so-called “Baby Defender.” The larger Range Rover Electric, built on the MLA platform at Solihull, uses a different architecture, which also serves as the base for the Jaguar Type 01. If the top-spec Range Rover GT is priced near the Jaguar Type 01, JLR could end up with two competing luxury electric GTs from its own brands.
