Rhine Falls to Record Low as Drought Hits Germany

Germany's Rhine River has dropped to its lowest water level on record, stranding boats in Cologne as a prolonged spell of heat and drought continues to affect the country. The Rhine is Germany's busiest waterway, and its level has fallen dramatically in recent weeks.

Officials are warning of mounting economic consequences for shipping and for industries that depend on river transport, as forecasts point to no immediate relief from the heat and drought.
