France and Spain continue to fight record-breaking forest fires. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the next 12 hours will be tough, but the situation is improving, and residents in some areas have been allowed to return home.
In France, military personnel are involved in firefighting, and Belgium has sent specialized equipment. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC) is calling on member states to jointly invest in expensive firefighting aircraft, which would be stationed in various European countries.
ERCC unit head Maria Zuberu said the centre is asking countries to send planes, helicopters, and firefighters to where they are most needed. Coordinators will also be dispatched to help with on-site coordination, and the centre is preparing to cover the costs of these response measures.
