On the "Upmaļi" farm in Kurzeme, the rare medicinal plant Rhodiola rosea, also known as golden root or roseroot, has been cultivated for more than three decades. Owners Māra and Dainis Bergmanis say the plant has brought them greater vitality and energy in recent years. Although little known in Latvia, golden root is a highly sought-after dietary supplement in Germany and other countries.

Golden root belongs to the Crassulaceae family and grows very slowly – it takes seven years from seed to harvest. This requires heavy and careful manual labor, but the couple insists it is worth the effort. For thousands of years, the plant has been used in traditional Chinese medicine and Northern folk healing to reduce anxiety and restlessness, restore energy and vitality, and strengthen the immune system and mental abilities.

Demand for golden root products increases by at least nine percent annually. Unfortunately, this often leads to the destruction of natural habitats and expensive counterfeits. Scientists warn that the species may become extinct in the wild, so enthusiasts across the Northern Hemisphere have begun cultivating it themselves. At "Upmaļi," golden root has been grown organically for over 30 years, starting from seedlings received as a gift and later propagated.

The farm began as a biodynamic operation, later diversifying into tourism and livestock. In 2000, Dainis started working as a parish administrator, which led to serious health issues. Gradually, the family shifted to growing teas and medicinal herbs, and turned to healing practices such as Reiki, Ayurvedic massage, and other methods.
