Cat-themed road sign spotted in Riga's Čiekurkalns district
A user of the social network Threads photographed a road sign in Čiekurkalns, Riga, that shows a cat with a raised tail where a pedestrian would normally be. Commenters said similar signs exist elsewhere, including in Purvciems.

A photo of an unusual road sign in Čiekurkalns, a neighbourhood of Riga, Latvia, has been shared on the social network Threads. In place of the usual pedestrian figure, the sign shows a cat with its tail raised. The post, dated 18 October, drew the attention of other users.
The photographer wrote that she had never seen such a sweet road sign in Riga, and added that a nearby building looked like a box of Laima assorted chocolates.
Other locations mentioned
Users said in the comments that similar signs have been seen in other Riga neighbourhoods. One commenter wrote that there was another one in Purvciems. Others reacted positively to the design, calling it a great sign.
The person who put up the sign also commented. She wrote that she had spotted it online, would show it to her husband, and that they care about the cats on their street.
Not a standard symbol
The sign looks like a pedestrian crossing sign, but the cat silhouette is not a symbol used on standard road signs. It serves more as a decorative element and a reminder to drivers that animals also move around the neighbourhood.
