People in Latvia have lost more than €16 million to fraudsters this year, according to statistics compiled by the police. The figure comes up in connection with a report on how people become so-called money mules, meaning individuals through whom criminally obtained money is moved. The report's title indicates that the programme "Nekā personīga" took part in the detention of fraudsters.
Statistics are incomplete
The police figures do not give the full picture. Not all victims report crimes, so the true number of people defrauded and the total losses could be considerably higher than the recorded amounts.
A rising trend
The number of fraud cases and the amount of misappropriated funds have been growing in recent years. The sum recorded this year already exceeds €16 million.
