Riga City Council has issued a notice warning that a storm is expected to begin on Saturday and may continue through Sunday. Residents are asked to avoid going outside without necessity, and in particular to stay away from parks, cemeteries, recreational areas and children's playgrounds, since trees and branches may break. Heavy rainfall is also forecast, which could cause local flooding, so people are advised against using private vehicles during the storm.

The national weather service warned that on Saturday afternoon wind gusts will strengthen to 20–24 meters per second, with some areas potentially seeing gusts of 25–28 m/s in the evening.

Handling dangerous trees

Alongside the State Fire and Rescue Service, municipal crews will help clear park paths, repair damaged public transport power lines, and monitor water levels. Residents facing damage that threatens health, life or transport should call the emergency number 112. Fallen trees that pose no immediate danger can be reported via the municipal phone line 1201 or by email. If a tree falls on private land, residents must photograph it before removal and notify the City Development Department. Trees down in apartment building courtyards should be reported to the building's management company.

Safety recommendations

The fire and rescue service advises charging mobile phones in advance and installing the 112 app, preparing flashlights and radio batteries, and securing or bringing indoors any loose items from balconies and yards. During the storm, people are urged to stay indoors, avoid standing under trees, advertising stands or scaffolding, close windows and doors, and refrain from using umbrellas, which can become hazardous in strong wind.
