Russian journalist Grigory Nekhoroshev, who famously broke the story about President Vladimir Putin's relationship with former gymnast Alina Kabayeva, has been found dead in Riga, according to Estonian media outlet Rus.Postimees.
Nekhoroshev, aged 69, was the editor-in-chief of the newspaper Moskovskiy Korrespondent. In 2008, the paper published an article claiming that Putin planned to divorce his then-wife Lyudmila and marry Kabayeva. The report caused a major stir both in Russia and abroad.
The circumstances of the journalist's death have not been officially disclosed. The news of his death in Riga was reported citing sources close to the matter. The incident once again highlights the risks faced by independent journalists in Russia, particularly those who have uncovered sensitive information about the country's leadership.
