The Latvian government has approved regulatory changes that will allow Riga Airport to serve as an official export point for live agricultural animals. This marks a first for Latvia, as previously such exports by air were not possible. The move opens the door for the Baltic region to export live hoofed animals via air transport.

The amendments were introduced in response to business interest in developing animal exports to third countries, particularly Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. According to initial estimates, the volume of shipments could reach several thousand cattle by the end of this year. The specific airlines and logistics arrangements have yet to be announced.

This development is expected to benefit livestock farmers in Latvia and the Baltics by providing access to new markets through faster air transport. The lack of such export facilities had previously been a barrier to industry growth.
