Rīgas nami: Meat Pavilion closure not due to sudden problem, but aging building

The closure of the Riga Central Market Meat Pavilion is the result of a long-term process, not a sudden issue, says SIA "Rīgas nami".

SIA "Rīgas nami" explains that the closure of the Meat Pavilion at the Riga Central Market is not related to an unexpected problem, but rather to the wear and tear of the nearly century-old building's structures and long-accumulated technical challenges. The pavilion, an architectural monument of national importance, has been in operation since 1930.

The Building Authority (BVKB) banned the use of the pavilion in June after "Rīgas nami" commissioned an updated technical survey at the beginning of 2026. The survey results served as the basis for the BVKB assessment and decision. Earlier, in 2017, the BVKB had required the removal of additional loads, which was done by 2018. In 2020, a technical inspection found some load-bearing elements in unsatisfactory condition, but the overall conclusion allowed continued operation with local safety measures.

Since mid-2022, when "Rīgas nami" took over management of the Central Market, the company has invested more than €2.4 million in market maintenance and development. The development concept called for the gradual renovation of all five pavilions, including relocating meat trade to renovated pavilions by spring 2027. The BVKB decision has accelerated this process.

Currently, "Rīgas nami" is working on temporary solutions for tenants to ensure the availability of meat products on the market grounds. Some traders have already moved to other trading spots within the Central Market.
