Riga’s schools face a shortage of 10th-grade places this year. With approximately 4,500 spots available, 5,332 students are applying, creating a tense situation.

Today, the first results of the new unified admission system were announced. This system, introduced for the first time this year, aims to centralize and streamline the admission process for upper secondary schools, but it is currently struggling to meet demand.

Parents and students are concerned, as many may need to look for alternatives, such as applying to schools outside Riga or choosing different educational programs. It remains unclear whether all spots will be filled and what steps will be taken for those not admitted.

Educational authorities acknowledge that the system is still being implemented and may have flaws. However, the main reason for the shortage is the high number of students wishing to study in Riga schools. The municipality has promised to keep the public informed about further measures.
