During a visit to Lithuania, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs raised concerns about potential Russian provocations in the Baltic region. Referring to intelligence from Lithuania, Latvia, and other NATO allies, he stated that Russia is attempting sabotage and hybrid attacks to undermine regional security.
Rinkēvičs emphasized the need to be extremely prepared for the phase of the war in Ukraine where Russia is no longer achieving victories and cannot advance on the battlefield. Even if Ukraine does not achieve a complete victory, Russia might indirectly test NATO's Article 5 and the governance mechanisms of the alliance and the European Union.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda confirmed on Tuesday reports in Western media that Russia could stage provocations in the Baltic states and Poland to test NATO unity.
Rinkēvičs also noted that security services are detaining an increasing number of individuals spying for or cooperating with Russia and Belarus. "They are truly testing our readiness and vigilance. We must be prepared to respond to new threats," the Latvian president said.
