Artist Roberts Koļcovs: Discipline Helps Overcome Lazy Days
Artist Roberts Koļcovs' anniversary exhibition "Inertia and Pull of Silence" is on view at the Ola Foundation cultural space until 9 January. On Latvian Radio 3, he spoke about discipline and the role of silence in his work.

An anniversary exhibition by the artist Roberts Koļcovs, titled "Inertia and Pull of Silence" ("Klusuma inerce un vilkme"), runs at the Ola Foundation cultural space until 9 January. It mainly features works created over the past year.
Speaking on the programme "Atspere" on Latvian Radio 3, the artist described how these works come about. According to him, a clear deadline date is often important on the way to completing them, as it helps him get through days of laziness. He also stressed that discipline is needed, and that it serves as a lifeline.
Room for silence
Koļcovs said his works also require space for silence. In this context he mentioned the conductor Sigvards Kļava and what happens once a piece of music has finished. In the artist's words, it is the silence in which the conductor exhales before he can begin drawing breath in again.
The exhibition's title brings together two ideas that the artist refers to in his work and reflections: silence and its inertia, along with pull.
