Ronaldo's future with Portugal: Should the legend start or come off the bench?
Cristiano Ronaldo, at 41, faces questions about his starting role as Portugal prepares for a World Cup last-16 match against Spain, with his performances drawing both praise and criticism.

Ronaldo responds to critics
Cristiano Ronaldo has addressed the debate over his future and his performances at the World Cup ahead of Portugal's last-16 tie against Spain. The 41-year-old, who confirmed this will be his last World Cup, told the media: "I am not the player I used to be." When asked about recent criticism, he replied: "You've been trying to kill me for 23 years, but it hasn't worked. I will stop when I choose, not when you choose."
Statistics and lineup debate
Ronaldo has scored three goals in the tournament, but his overall play has been questioned. He has taken 15 shots—almost twice as many as any teammate—but has not created a single chance. In three of Portugal's four matches, he has had fewer than 25 touches, his lowest in any World Cup. His average of 4.4 runs behind the defence per match is significantly lower than in previous tournaments.
There have been suggestions that Portugal play better without him. In September 2023, without Ronaldo, Portugal thrashed Luxembourg 9-0, and in November 2023 they beat Armenia 9-1. However, many fans believe Ronaldo has earned the right to decide his own role.
Future with the national team
Coach Roberto Martinez said Ronaldo's leadership and work in the final third remain among the best in the world. Since Martinez took over in 2023, Ronaldo has featured in 36 of Portugal's 44 games, mostly missing only due to injury or suspension.
Despite the doubts, fans still adore the player who "helped us dream." Supporter Angelo said before the Croatia match: "He should dictate whether he wants to stay on. He deserves that." Now all eyes are on whether Martinez will start Ronaldo against Spain or give Goncalo Ramos, who scored the winner against Croatia, a starting place.
