Romanian lawmakers voted against Adrian Vestea's nomination for prime minister on Monday, dealing a fresh blow to political stability in the country. Vestea needed 233 votes from both chambers of parliament to secure approval but received only 189. Some deputies walked out before the vote after a day of debate on his proposed cabinet.

Vestea, a 52-year-old former mayor and regional government leader who also served as development minister, was nominated by President Nicusor Dan on June 14. This followed the collapse of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan's liberal government in a no-confidence vote in May, which was supported by center-left and far-right parties. Bolojan's coalition had enacted unpopular austerity measures, including tax hikes, to tackle the EU's largest budget deficit.

Vestea's own Liberal Party, led by Bolojan, refused to back him and threatened expulsion. He had previously stated he would negotiate with pro-Western democratic parties but also held talks with the far-right AUR party, which holds 90 seats. After the defeat, Vestea blamed AUR, saying, "I have a clear conscience. I did my duty." In a Facebook post, he warned that 47 days without a government are costing Romania in European funds, trust, and time.

President Dan has repeatedly ruled out including the far right in government. If Dan's next nominee is also rejected, snap elections would be triggered. Analyst Remus Ioan of INSCOP Research said that would be "a catastrophe for the country, the economy, businesses and people's earnings," and only AUR would benefit from such an election.
