In a thrilling fourth-round match at Wimbledon on Sunday, Naomi Osaka (WTA 14) defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (7:2).
Sabalenka, who had beaten Latvia's top tennis player Alona Ostapenko 4-6, 4-6 in the third round on Friday, was candid after the loss: "I just want to go away, get really drunk, forget about tennis and try to improve my physical condition."
Earlier this season, Sabalenka had won all three previous encounters between the two, including a victory over Osaka at the same stage of the French Open.
For Osaka, this win is particularly significant as Wimbledon had been her least successful Grand Slam tournament—she had never advanced beyond the third round.
In the quarterfinals, Osaka will face Karolina Muchova (WTA 9) from the Czech Republic, who defeated fellow Czech Barbora Krejcikova (WTA 38) 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
Also on Sunday, American Jessica Pegula (WTA 4) secured her quarterfinal spot by beating compatriot Iva Jovic (WTA 14) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
