Norway defeated five-time champions Brazil 2-1 on Sunday in New Jersey, USA, to secure a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time.

Erling Haaland scored both goals for Norway. He opened the scoring in the 79th minute with a header from Andreas Schjelderup's cross, and added a second in the final minute of regular time with a powerful long-range shot, again set up by Schjelderup. Haaland now has seven goals in the tournament, the best tally alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé.

Brazil missed a penalty in the first half – Bruno Guimarães saw his 14th-minute spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Ørjan Nylund. It was Brazil's first missed penalty (excluding shootouts) in a World Cup since 1986. Nylund also made saves from Vinícius Júnior and Rian Roša.

In the second half, Brazil brought on Neymar, but he could not turn the game. Deep into stoppage time, Leo Østigård conceded a penalty, and Neymar scored his 80th international goal – a Brazil record – but it was too little, too late.

Brazil failed to reach the quarterfinals for the first time since 1990. Norway will face the winner of England vs. Mexico in the next round. Other round-of-16 matches include Portugal vs. Spain, USA vs. Belgium, Argentina vs. Egypt, and Switzerland vs. Colombia. France and Morocco have already advanced.

The tournament is the first with 48 teams, divided into 12 groups. Norway had lost to France (1-4) in the group stage but beat Iraq and Senegal.
