Approximately a week ago, Latvian society experienced a moral panic targeting two poems from Ivar Steinberg's children's poetry collection "Ams, ams, ams!" According to observers, this reaction was not surprising given the prevalent fear of otherness.

Comments on social media exposed deep-seated homophobia, hatred, anger, and panic among adults. Although this was not the first such incident, the content of the comments shocked many.

The debate over what is acceptable in children's literature has once again become relevant. Part of society believes that themes related to otherness are morally degrading and frightening, and thus should not appear in children's books. Others, however, defend the right to discuss diversity from an early age.

This case highlights the need for broader discussions about tolerance and education in society. The question of what literature is suitable for children remains open and contentious.
