Sam Neill’s final interview: ‘I’ve had to overcome the ordinariness of my appearance’
In a Q&A with readers, actor Sam Neill reflects on his roles, his farm animals named after celebrities, and his health after cancer.

In his final interview, actor Sam Neill, best known for Jurassic Park and The Piano, answered questions from readers covering his career, personal life, and health.
Neill discussed working with Robin Williams on Bicentennial Man, describing Williams as having an 'affliction' of constant humor and a hidden sadness. He also spoke about his dog, a rescue named Fire, who once caused a delay on a flight by defecating in the cargo hold.
Regarding his name change from Nigel to Sam, Neill called Nigel the 'wettest name ever' and said he would not have had a film career if he kept it. He also revealed he was tempted by the James Bond role but is relieved he didn't become an 'ex-Bond'.
After undergoing chemotherapy for five years, Neill follows a diet of whatever he wants, often eating stewed fruit from his farm. He also grows his own chardonnay grapes after replacing his pinot noir vines.
On his appearance, Neill stated: 'I’ve had to overcome the ordinariness of my appearance.' He also shared that he supports underdog teams in sports, preferring Ireland over the All Blacks.
Neill recalled a speech at his boarding school where he told the boys without special blazers that they would make something of their lives, and noted that being head prefect would be a disappointment afterward.
