Latvian Parliament Committee Backs Further Reduction of Russian Language Content on LSM
The Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee on Tuesday supported proposals to significantly reduce Russian-language content in public media, including LSM.

The Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee on Tuesday, July 14, backed proposals to impose stricter limits on Russian-language content in the public broadcaster LSM. The proposals will be included in the second reading of the Law on Public Electronic Media and Its Governance. Current legislation already sets quotas for Latvian language content, but the committee seeks to tighten them by reducing the volume of Russian-language programming. Lawmakers argue that this step is necessary to strengthen the role of Latvian in the public sphere and to counter the influence of Russian propaganda. As a public service media, LSM primarily serves Latvian-speaking audiences, and Russian-language content is considered an additional service rather than a core function. The exact extent of the reduction has not yet been determined, but it could be significant. The amendments still need to be approved by the full Saeima.
