One person dies in salmonella outbreak in Finland; second case under investigation

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), at least one person has died from salmonella in Finland during an outbreak earlier this year. There is also a suspected additional death that may be linked to salmonella, but this has not been officially confirmed, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports. Both cases – one confirmed and one suspected – in Finland are associated with a domestic sprout producer. Investigation revealed that the source of the epidemic was contaminated alfalfa seeds from India that were imported to Europe. The epidemic is believed to have begun spreading across Europe in October 2025.
